A wizard once told me,
there's no such thing as fiction.
No novels, no dreams,
Just whispers from another realm.
The many worlds theory,
I learned it in a paperback.
No magic, just equations.
The wizard knew better still.
As the universe expands, it splits.
A vast, branching tree of realities.
Infinite possibilities existing.
In every domain, a counterpart sits.
In this world, we text a ‘happy birthday,’
across a silence that lasts a year.
In this world, we met after you married.
In this world, we live decades of miles apart.
In my dreams, sometimes she has died.
(When I wake, I feel guilty for those).
In my dreams, sometimes there's a divorce.
In my dreams, our friendship is rekindled.
In this world, I realized years too late
that you might have loved me.
In this world, I trusted the boundary.
In this world, you were only my best friend.
In fiction, the realm where we kissed.
It is simple, good, and right.
In fiction, you were my first everything.
In fiction, we are undoubtedly soulmates.
In so many other realities we come together.
My counterparts can love their version of you.
If you believe the wizard, and I do,
there are countless realms where we reign.
Sometimes you don't cross my mind,
for weeks or months at a time.
Then a message leaks in from another world
and I revisit the almost-love we had here.
I know realms where we are strangers
and some where we broke your vows.
In this story, I loved you enough to keep your peace,
and that boundary still holds the throne.
